The newly restored Myra Canyon Trestles will have their grand opening in June.

The restoration project has been in the works since the trestles were destroyed in the 2003 forest fire.

Blair Baldwin with the Trestle Restoration Committee says a celebration will be held on June 22 to mark the end of the 5 year project.

Baldwin tells us, "all of the trestles have been rebuilt as they were, as they looked for the Kettle Valley Railway, and now that it's part of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, it will be the jewel in the Spirit of 2010 Trail."

According to Baldwin, the project is ahead of schedule:  "We thought we'd be opening in the fall of 2008 and now we have identified Sunday, June 22nd as the official date.  It's going to be a true community celebration."

Baldwin says the historical trestles were rebuilt to hold the weight of a fully loaded truck for emergency maintenance purposes.

To the Trestle Restoration Committee's knowledge, this project is the largest single re-build of a rail trail in the world.
