Forever the Maple Laffs

Forever the Maple Laffs

I know the start of the NHL season is still a couple of months away, but it's never too early to take part in one of my favourite pasttimes...making fun of the Toronto Maple Laffs.

A buddy of mine from Toronto passed this on to me...it's a letter sent out to all Laff players in 1962 regarding their training camp:

Save a buck or two

Save a buck or two

This morning on the Brock Jackson Show we were discussing ways to "get a deal."

Sometimes it's just as simple as asking the front desk staff for an upgrade to a better room, or finding out if a business offers a discount for BCAA members (I think I ask this just about everywhere!)

My good friend and mentor, Oprah Winfrey (still waiting for that call to come on the show O!) recently posted some info on her website on how to get a great deal on everything from airfare to zucchini. Of course, it is all U.S. based but it can still give you some great tips on gettin' a deal!
We DON'T scream for this ice cream!

We DON'T scream for this ice cream!

Chocolate, strawberry, rocky road...there are many ice cream flavours that we all scream for...but there are some that very few would be hollerin' for.

Check out this list of the Top 10 Weirdest Ice Cream Flavours.

RIP Big Stein

RIP Big Stein

I don't enjoy writing about deaths, but it seems that some big names are passing away lately.

Last week it was Bob Probert, and today, news comes out that another heavyweight has passed away, George Steinbrenner.

Anyone who follows sports, knows of Big Stein.

In 1973, he took over the New York Yankees, and steered them to 11 pennants and 7 World Series Championships. He retired from the Yankees in 2006, leaving his sons Hank and Hal to run the team...but everyone still considered Steinbrenner the 'face' of the organization (I would bet MANY people didn't even know that his sons were now running the show.)
RIP Probie

RIP Probie

I'm a hockey fan.

I'm also a fan of hockey fights.

I'm also a fan of the king of hockey fights, Bob Probert.

Yesterday, Bob Probert died at the age of 45.

He was a relatively good hockey player...twice scoring 20+ goals in an NHL season...and he racked up 163 goals in his 935 NHL games with Detroit and Chicago...but what "Probie" will always be known for are his fights.

Wow...the list of Probert fights are legendary:
vs. Tie Domi
vs. Link Gaetz
vs. Marty McSorely
vs. Craig Coxe
Even vs. his hold teammate and "Bruise Brother" Joey Kocur.
Help the Testalinden Creek mudslide victims

Help the Testalinden Creek mudslide victims

In the time of need, it's great to see the community bonding together to help those in our own backyard.

Recently, there have been many fundraising efforts all over Osoyoos, Oliver and Penticton to help those people who lost so much, during the June 13th mudslide in Oliver. It really shows the power of community when we ALL get together for a common cause.

Coming up on Sunday from 5pm-10pm there will be a large fundraising event at Rustico Farm and Cellars in Oliver.

It will be an old fashioned potluck dinner, with live entertainment and tons of people! Selected Rustico wines will also be available for purchase, with 50% of the proceeds of those selected wines, going to help the mudslide victims.
Memorable moment

Memorable moment

June 17th, 1994.

I was sitting at home with my mom, flipping through the tv channels when 'it' happened.

I bet you know where were you were when you first heard, or, more specifically, when you first SAW...the white...Ford...Bronco.

Yes, O.J. Simpson, a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ron Goldman, was on the run.

The world was captivated with it. I mean, check out the number of people that were lining the freeway just to watch the Bronco drive by...it was nuts!

And do you think they had enough officers chasing after him? Sarcasm intended.
Got celebrities?

Got celebrities?

Looking for some celebs? Well, look no further than Osoyoos this weekend!

The Osoyoos Celebrity Wine Festival kicks off tonight with The Vinos at the Watermark Beach Resort.

It continues through the weekend with the Celebrity Beach Party, the Nota Bene Release Party @ Black Hills Estate Winery and the grand-daddy of the weekend, the Celebrity Wine Auction Saturday night at Spirit Ridge.

It's only the 2nd year for this festival and despite it's young age, it's already garnering some big-time attention. How sweet it is for our area to be hosting celebs from all over the world!
Robin Stickley - Oliver Half Iron

Robin Stickley - Oliver Half Iron

Friday on the Brock Jackson Show I had the pleasure of speaking with first time Oliver Half Iron participant, Robin Stickley.

You may recognize her voice, as she's the anchor for the Weekend News Hour on Global BC TV.

She's very excited about her first Half Iron this Sunday, and visiting the Wine Capital of Canada!

In case you missed our chat, here it is:

So you want to be in the movies?

So you want to be in the movies?

The 20th Century Fox feature film "The Big Year" will be shooting near Osoyoos this June.

The film stars Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black, and is directed by David Frankel ("The Devil Wears Prada" and "Marley and Me").

They are looking for local men and women of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities between the ages of 25 years old to seniors who are interested in working as paid Extras on the movie.

On Saturday, May 29 there will be a casting session held in Osoyoos to meet anyone who would like to apply for employment as an Extra.
It's that time of year again

It's that time of year again

And away we GO!

Welcome to the Victoria Day Long Weekend...or as some call it...May 2-4 Weekend (that's a very Ontario term)

Anyhow, whatever you call it, it's the weekend that unofficially kicks off the summer holiday season.

It's the weekend where the campers and trailers are loaded...and people start their road trip adventures...leading to conjested trips up and down Highway 97, Highway 3 and the Trans-Canada.

Sure enough, this morning at 9:30am I drove from the Osoyoos border, to Tim Horton's...a 5 minute trip if that...and I passed 11 RV's.
Lightning Crashes

Lightning Crashes

Mother Nature is one unpredictable woman!

Over the weekend, lightning struck our transmitter on top of Kobau Mountain and knocked our station off the air. When Monday morning rolled around, and Jeremy showed up to fill in for me, that's when we realized it was hooped!

So, it's been a busy last few days for our engineers as they try to get the mighty EZ Rock back on the air and up to full power.

We are continuously broadcasting in Osoyoos and Oliver on AM 1240 (which is, technically, our REAL signal, the FM 102.9 is just a repeater) and AM 1400 Princeton. We may have some interruptions to the FM signal over the next few days...so if you can't find us on FM...find us on AM!

One mother of a winner!

One mother of a winner!

A big congrats goes out to our grand prize winner on One Mother of a Contest...Marg Chadsey of Osoyoos!

She picked up dinner for two at Passa Tempo Restaurant, 2 rounds of golf at Sonora Dunes, a wine tour at NK'Mip Cellars, a facial at Sonora Desert Spa, plus a 1 night stay at Spirit Ridge. All of that, on top of the Mother's Day brunch she won on Wednesday.

ENJOY!

As we like to say in the radio business, "the winning, is just beginning"...apparently we love to rhyme stuff...because starting Monday we bring in a brand new sponsor for the Birthday Club!
9 to 5

9 to 5

This morning on the show for my Way Back Track, we went back to May 3rd, 1981...when the number one song was Sheena Easton's "Morning Train (9 to 5)."

A very catchy tune...but I'll always remember this song for the time it was used in a Seinfeld episode where George pretends to be handicapped, so he can get a job at Play Now.

The job is made so great, because George gets his own handicapped bathroom which included one of those raised toilets that allow him to, as he puts it, "perch like a gargoyle"...but I digress...here's Sheena and George:
Snack attack!

Snack attack!

After hearing about the world record pile of nachos that was recently built (3800+ lbs worth!) I wanted to find out what YOUR favourite snack foods were.

The overwhelming favourite, according to callers, is Hawkins Cheezies.

People love those hard, crunchy, orange coloured, cheese flavoured pieces of snacking goodness!

Of course, there were other suggestions, like pretzels, popcorn, poutine (nice one Yvon) and our buddy Oliver Ron called up incredibly excited to tell us about his favourite thing to snack on...CHIPS!
The Day the Music Died...for my generation

The Day the Music Died...for my generation

Time to put aside talk about Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson's doctor and all the other "celebrity" trash that's floating around on Easter Monday...and take time to remember a guy who influenced millions upon millions of people who were rockin' the Doc Marten's, flannel jackets and scruffy beards on this day in 1994.

Today is the day that Kurt Cobain took his own life.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard about it...packing groceries at Super Valu in Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver. News came down the check out line from one clerk to the next...and everyone was suddenly in a daze (almost everyone I worked with was around the same age as me, so we all recognized the magnitude of the event.)
STOP! In the name of April Fools Day

STOP! In the name of April Fools Day

Thursday morning on the B-Jack Show I had Terry David Mulligan help me out with a little April Fools Day foolin!

TDM talked about how he was the trumpet player in the Supreme's 1965 hit "STOP! In the Name of Love"...he added that he was one of the people clapping in the song...and the capper...that he used his RCMP training (4 years he was a Mountie) to convince the girls to put up the STOP sign during the song.

Funny stuff!

Did ANYONE buy any of that? Maybe...maybe not...but it was fun nonetheless.

Can't you just see Terry teaching the girls the "STOP" move??
Movie Madness

Movie Madness

On Tuesdays, new movies are released to DVD and so today, I thought I'd bring up a discussion about which movies are your faves.

Well...I never expected to get SO much response!

The phones didn't stop all morning and there were tons of submissions.
Brian's Song
Casablanca
Titanic
African Queen
The Sting
The Sixth Sense
The Sound of Music...just to name a few.

Plus there were more submitted via Facebook including Pretty Woman and The Wizard of Oz.

You sure do love your movies!

Anyone who knows me, knows that this movie my fave (the opening 'crawl' idea is one of the most under-appreciated aspects of the Star Wars movies...and the way it phases into the battle scene is just brilliant. Plus, we get introduced to the greatest villan of all time!):
Great Grapes

Great Grapes

The man.

The legend.

The controversy.

Don Cherry.

The subject of Grapes took over the airwaves this morning on the Brock Jackson Show as many people called, Facebooked or Tweeted us with their opinion on the man that almost every Canadian knows and, well, some love.

Many callers praised Grapes for the way he stands his ground on issues like no touch icings, the military and even how he's told the kids many times to no use the Lord's name in a profane way.

Other's said they think he's just full of hot air and should be muzzled!
What's bloomin?

What's bloomin?

The Brock Jackson Show is your home for music, info, entertainment and lots of conversation...including chatting about GARDENS!

If there's one thing I know about residents in the South Okanagan, it's that a TON of you love to get your hands dirty in the yard.

That's why we've teamed up with The Home of Every Blooming Thing in Oliver to bring you a chat with gardening guru Lloyd Park, every Monday and Thursday at 7:20.

Lloyd and his wife Veral own T.H.O.E.B.T. and twice a week we'll get Lloyd's expert advice on plants, veggies, flowers, shrubs...EVERYTHING that you'll find in the yard and garden.
Stone Soup Chef competition

Stone Soup Chef competition

Thanks to Terry David Mulligan who, this morning during TDM in the AM, told us about this really cook cooking competition going on in Kelowna.

It all benefits the Kelowna mission...perhaps we could have something like this in the South Okanagan??

CLICK HERE for more info on Stone Soup Chef.

He'll have a full report on it in NEXT week's version of the Tasting Room.

Playin' some Irish

Playin' some Irish

This morning on the B-Jack Show, instead of chugging Guinness all morning to celebrate St. Patty's Day, I counted down the top 5 best selling Irish musicians of all time.

In case you missed the list:

5. The Corrs

4. The Cranberries

3. Van Morrison

2. Enya

1. U2

It wasn't shocking at all to find U2 at the top of the list, but Enya?

When you think of big musical acts, her name probably isn't the first one that pops into your head.

But, as of 2009, she's sold 70 million albums worldwide...and counting! She's pretty darn popular.

Mmmmm...blueberry pancakes

Mmmmm...blueberry pancakes

On Sunday my girlfriend made delicious, blueberry pancakes for breakfast.

I hadn't had pancakes in a while and, well gosh darn it, these were the absolute BESTEST pancakes a dj ever did have!

So it got me talking to you about what your favourite breakfast items were.

I had lots of calls so thanks for the feedback...omlettes, poached eggs (soft enough so you could dunk your toast), eggs benny...just some of the items that listeners LOVE to have!

What about your fave?

Email me with your faves anytime: brock@myezrock.com

All this table talk has got me hungry for pancakes!!!
Family dinner...with Fido

Family dinner...with Fido

Okay so it's time for family dinner.

Mom and dad are home from a long day at work and the kids have been busy with school and sports.

It's the perfect time for everyone to catch up on what's kept them busy all day long.

Oh, you can't forget to have Fido sit down with you for dinner too right?

But Fido can't be under the table...or next to the table...that would be far too cruel. It wouldn't make them "part of the family."

So what do you do?

Ya slip them into the Pet High Chair!

Now your cat or dog can sit DIRECTLY at your dinner table and dine with you.
The Brock Jackson Show goes to the dogs

The Brock Jackson Show goes to the dogs

This morning I had a guest co-host on the Brock Jackson Show.

He's a little stinky, he's a little needy, and he loves long walks. He's my dog Pepper!

I had to bring him in as he had to go for a (much overdo) grooming right after my show.

It was his first time in the studio and for the most part...was very well behaved. I'm still in shock!

I asked listeners about pets in the workplace...and most people were okay with it.

They said that as long as the animal is well behaved, it doesn't bother them.

But there were some callers that said "no thanks" to people bringing pets to work. They said that the pets can become a distraction, and people will spend more time taking care of their pets, than taking care of work.
What to do, what to DO?

What to do, what to DO?

Starting Monday, kids in the South Okanagan are off for two weeks for spring break.

Parents, are you getting sweaty palms? Feeling uneasy? Nervous about having the kids around for TWO weeks? What will you do to keep them busy???

Tomorrow, we'll get advice from the parents in our area! I'll be looking for you to help me out by calling in, and giving suggestions on what other parents can do to keep the kids busy during spring break.

Parents helping parents...it's a beautiful thing!

Make sure to call in tomorrow between 6a-9a with your suggestions...250-495-7244 in Osoyoos and Oliver, 250-295-6991 in Princeton!
NHL Letdown Day

NHL Letdown Day

When I realized that I had scheduled a dentist appointment, on the same day as the NHL trade deadline...I kicked myself.

Traditionally, today is one of the most exciting days for hockey fans with the non-stop rumours, trades, action and analysis.

Now that the deadline has passed...I sure didn't miss much!

When some of the biggest names switching teams are Jeff Halpern, Lee Stempniak, Scott Walker and Andrew Alberts...you know that Deadline Day was Dead Quiet Day.

I guess in terms of the total number of trades completed, there were a lot, but hardly any moves would be considered shocking.
Shock and Awe

Shock and Awe

If you predicted that the Canadian men's hockey team would come out and absolutely manhandle the Russian squad in their quater-final matchup yesterday...please stand up.

Okay, now that EVERYONE is still sitting, let's discuss.

If you were like me, you were in your chair at the end of the first period and you were thinking "my God...we're up 4-1? I can't believe it. What year is this?"

No one believed it.

Not Mike Babcock. Not Stephen Harper. Not Billy the Bartender at your local pub. Geez, I bet that even Donald S. Cherry wouldn't have believed you if you said we'd be up 4-1 after a period versus Russia.
Which is a better rivalry?

Which is a better rivalry?

When it comes to international hockey...Canada has two main rivals...the USA and Russia.

This afternoon Canada plays Russia in the Olympics...winner moves on...loser goes home.

Now, the rivalry with Russia goes back farther, but the rivalry with the USA is fresh and red-hot!

This morning I fielded a ton of calls on which rivalry gets you going more...and 81% of callers said Canada/USA is their fave.

I guess it's moments like this that make us wave the flag harder than ever:

Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures

This morning I fielded a ton of calls regarding your favourite "guilty pleasure" tv shows.

I brought it up becuase, over the last few years, one of my GP's has become The Bachelor/Bachelorette.

I never used to watch the show, but after moving in with my girlfriend a few years ago, the show has become a "must not miss!"

Funny how moving in with your significant other, really changes what you watch.

Tonight it's a big show where all the ladies who were sent home by Jake, get to call him out and find out WHY they went home.
Dancin' in the Street - at the Winter Games

Dancin' in the Street - at the Winter Games

This took place on Day 2 at the Vancouver Winter Games...a gigantic "flash mob" of 1500+ people dancin' (and singin') on Robson Street.

Although it was all planned ahead of time, if you were just Joe Average walking down Robson, you never would have known that THIS was going to break out:

Whatta Weekend

Whatta Weekend

Quite the wild Valentine's weekend wouldn't you say?

Not only were people busy spending time (and money) on their sweethearts, but at the same time, the Olympics were getting underway!

It began on a somber tone, with the world grieving the death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili from Georgia.

It then moved ont to a pretty good opening ceremony. I'd give it a B+.

In typical Canadian fashion it was classy, creative and captivating...without being overblown or cheesy.

- what a simply incredible performance doing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." She is an amazing talent and I was very happy that she got the worldwide exposure that's long overdue. Sometimes I feel like the just doesn't get the credit she deserves, especially from Canadians.
Wild day of winning!

Wild day of winning!

Friday was a very exciting day on the Brock Jackson Show with tons of winners!

Miles from Osoyoos was the winner of a $50 gift certificate to Shoe Biz in Osoyoos on the Birthday Club.

Later, Martina from Oliver won a copy of the book "Chicken Soup for the Soul - True Love." It looks like a really entertaining and heartwarming book and I'll definitely be giving it a read.

But the big winner of the day, was Rosa.

Rosa had been trying all week to get on to play Love on the Air, but each time she called, she was never the correct caller. So when she made it through today, was the correct caller, I was praying inside that she answered the Love on the Air trivia question correctly. I would have hated for her NOT to win, considering how hard she had tried.
Winner = Cathy, Loser = Perfect Fit Button

Winner = Cathy, Loser = Perfect Fit Button

Cathy from Osoyoos was our winner on Love on the Air this morning on the Brock Jackson Show.

After playing Sheryl Crow's "Love is Free", Cathy correctly answered the trivia question about Miss Crow...telling me that she will soon be appearing on the show "Cougar Town."

Cathy picked up Valentine's dinner for two at Passa Tempo Restaurant. Your next chance to win is tomorrow at 7:15.

By the way, I went up to Passa Tempo and Spirit Ridge today...if you haven't been there in a while (or ever), you've GOT to go check it out. That resort is really amazing!
More Love...plus laughs with Leno and Letterman

More Love...plus laughs with Leno and Letterman

Love on the Air continues on the Brock Jackson Show!

This morning, Kristin from Osoyoos was our big winner...picking up Valentine's dinner for two at Passa Tempo in Osoyoos.

Enjoy the dinner Kristin!

Your next chance to play Love on the Air comes up tomorrow morning at 7:15.

Also today, I took lots of calls from listeners who were chiming in on thier favourite wine.

When the dust settled, 75% of callers to the Brock Jackson Show said they preferred red wine over white wine.

I'd say that was a little surprising. But, I bet if I did the same poll in the heat of August, there would be more support for cool, crisp glass of white!
Love on the Air Begins!

Love on the Air Begins!

Week two, show six, in the illustrious history of the Brock Jackson Show started with a bang!

This morning, Kim from Oliver was our first winner of Valentine's dinner for two at Passa Tempo Restaurant on our Love on the Air contest.

She correctly told me that the love song of the day, Tina Turner's huge hit, "What's Love Got to Do With It," came from her album "Private Dancer."

Way to go Kim! Enjoy that dinner at Passa Tempo!

Tomorrow, you'll have another chance to play Love on the Air at 7:15am.

I'll play a song with LOVE in the title, and then if you're the right caller to successfully answer a trivia question based on the song or artist, then YOU and your love will be off to Passa Tempo.

1 winner, 1 competitor, 1 contest

1 winner, 1 competitor, 1 contest

It was a busy day this morning on the Brock Jackson Show.

Jordan Paolera called in and won himself a Discovery 975 Bluetooth headset from Plantronics.

He answered our trivia question, telling us that on average, 117 people die in BC each year as a result of distracted driving.

That number is absurd!!

With the new laws banning chatting on the phone and texting while driving, hopefully that number comes down quickly! Those are needless deaths.

Later, Melodie Domene-Nick of Osoyoos came into the studio and told us about the upcoming Miss Teen BC competition in Kelowna that she's in.
Coffee, commercials and controversy

Coffee, commercials and controversy

It was all about the Three C's on the Brock Jackson Show today...coffee, commercials and controversy!

It was about a 80-20 split of people who choose coffee over tea (not surprisingly) but I also got callers suggesting I use sports drinks, fruit smoothies and good old fashioned water to wake up.

I'll do whatever it takes to get back into the routine! Thanks for all the suggestions.

I mentioned the Greatest Superbowl Commercials of all time are on the tube tonight...one of my faves from past Super Bowls is this one:

Crazy Callers

Crazy Callers

After some time away...a few things have happened in the South Okanagan and Similkimeen.

There are more condos.

There are more wineries.

There are more people in the towns...including...some guy identifying himself as only "The Sukinator."

Now, The Sukinator called me this morning and told me he lives in the backwoods between Oliver and Osoyoos and is a dedicated listener.

There is a lot to learn about this guy, he seems very complex and a little twisted.

I say twisted, because this morning he called to say that he is HAPPY with the prognostications of the groundhogs around North America...the guy WANTS more winter!
